This is how the story goes. The disciples of Jesus followed Him into a boat. While Jesus was sleeping in the boat, there came a furious storm which threatened to drown them all. The disciples were afraid, woke Jesus up and cried to Him to save them. And sure enough, Jesus calmed the storm but not after saying “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”
Jesus is telling all Christians, who want to follow in His footsteps and be like Him, not to be afraid. And in this story, He shows us why. The fact that He could command the winds and waves reveals to us that Jesus is the almighty divine, superman of supermen. And that is the reason not to fear. Jesus is powerful, so powerful that He can reverse the balance of nature. He can of course, save you from anything.
The raging storms symbolise the difficulties and obstacles you have to face in Christian life on earth. God does not promise a trouble free life. In fact, the storm suggests that being a Christian is not easy. Being a follower of Christ means entering through the narrow gate and taking the more difficult path. You have to sail through the mighty waves and winds in your quest to do the work of God. But Jesus assures you that He will help you overcome the raging storms of your Christian life when you follow Him. Why fear? Jesus is in the same boat as you (literarily based on the story), and He has overcome the world.
Another interesting observation of the story is that Jesus put across the point that fear is an unnecessary human feeling. Jesus indirectly told His disciples that He would have calmed the storm even if they had not desperately pleaded Him to do so. You only need such little faith and Jesus will go as far as commanding the forces of nature for you. Jesus will never let you drown while you follow Him. He is a saviour who has saved you from your sins, which separates God and man. Surely, He can save you from anything and everything.
No storm is too fast, furious or frightening for Jesus.
Do not fear anything when you fulfill God’s will and do His work. Fear is but a wasted emotion.
Rather, take courage and rejoice in knowledge that with God you will emerge victorious over every storm in your Christian life.
