Proverbs 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
How true is this short verse.
What is more important than your heart condition?
Your heart contains your true self, it represents who you really are.
Your outward actions may not be an accurate reflection of the heart. (Sounds like hypocrisy?)
Truth lies primarily in the heart, and the Lord is more concerned about the heart of a man more than anything else.
What you do, or the results of what you do, do not even matter half as much as why you do it.
God can mend the consequences, but you determine your intentions out of the free will God has given you.
Wellspring of life indeed. The spiritual battle is fought on the inside, in the depths of the heart. When a man falls, the battle is first lost in his heart. The physical realm sometimes reveals this when the actions follow up. When your heart is with the Lord, it brings life to you. When it strays away, sin and death sets in.
In the time of Solomon, the wellspring was a sacred place. As long as it is a little contaminated, any living thing that drinks from it dies. You have to guard your heart, do not even permit it to be slightly blemished. To guard it well, you not only have to put up a shield and wear and armour. You need to stay far away from the evil. It is not enough to resist sin. Do not even put yourself in a position where you are vulnerable to sin.
Guard your heart. Guard it securely and with everything you have, for it by what the Lord’s judges when the time is ripe.
